James III, was nine years old and so Scotland was once more ruled by regents until his accession at the age of 19. He married the King of Norway's daughter who brought with her the islands of Orkney and Shetland as part of her dowry. James was an intellectual, better fitted for an academic fife than for a crown. His nobles rose against him, hanged his favourite allies and claimed his son, James IV, to be king in his place. James III tried to regain power. His horse bolted and threw him. Badly injured, he begged for a priest and the man who stepped forward to administer the last rites stabbed him to death. |
