The Auld Alliance in12th century
 |
Malcolm IV inherited the throne from his grandfather David I, when aged only 13. Gentle and deeply religious, he ruled for only 12 years before his death, to be succeeded by his brother, William the Lion. William was ambitious and wanted to regain parts of his kingdom annexed by England. |
He established an alliance with France in 1165, 'The Auld Alliance', and tried to invade England. He failed, was taken prisoner, and sent to Normandy, where he was forced to sign the Treaty of Falaise. Scotland was now under feudal subjugation to England. 15 years later, when the English king, Richard Coeur de Lion, needed funds for a Crusade, he agreed to annul the Treaty of Falaise in return for 10,000 marks.
