The gentle landscape of the Border region belies its violent history. The remains of castles and abbeys ruined during the bloody clashes between Scots and English punctuate the fertile landscape. This is Walter Scott country, where many of the author’s historical novels are set and where the poet and novelist spent a good deal of his time.
The region’s turbulent past is remembered each year in the tradition of common ridings, when locals ride around the borders of their townships to assert their boundaries. This violent past may also be the reason why the area is fanatical about rugby, though this does not excuse the local enthusiasm for accordion music!
