Although golf was invented in St. Andrew’s on the opposite coast, Ayrshire boasts some of the most exceptional golfing facilities in the world. Indeed, the links at Prestwick was the site of the first ever Open Championship over one hundred years ago. Ayrshire was also the home of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns who was born in 1759 in a cottage in Alloway. The region is blessed with a mild climate brought in on the Gulf Stream breeze, nurturing the rich diversity of plant and animal life. Inland a little is Galloway Forest Park, a 250 mile expanse of wooded countryside topped by the Merrick hill, over 830 metres high, site of the battle at Glen Trool where in 1307 two thousand English troops were put to flight by Robert the Bruce and his men.
