The wild, breathless landscape of Skye provides a perfect match with its romantic and turbulent past. Its deep lochs and rugged mountains have provided the impassive backdrop to merciless Norse invasions, fierce mediaeval wars and bitter clan feuds, as well as the infamous forced evictions of the 19th century Highland Clearances. This scenically spectacular island takes its name from the Norse ‘skuy,’ meaning cloud, but is often referred to as Eilean a Cheo – the Misty Isle.
