Stone Age burial tombs and Iron Age remains testify to an unbroken legacy of continuous habitation in this remote part of Scotland. Their fertile, flat land is littered with Stone Age burial tombs, Iron Age settlements, Celtic Christian monasteries and great Norse halls. Near Stenness on Orkney Mainland, you will find the mysterious Ring of Brodgar, which dominates the skyline. Twenty-seven of the 60 original stones still stand, some 4m high, forming a ring around 2 ½ acres of this prehistoric site.
