Castles and great houses bespeak the historic riches of this region, whose coastline is dotted with old fishing ports and quaint villages, sandy beaches and golf courses. The gentle slopes of the Lammermuir Hills, clad with heather and gorse, mark the boundary to the Border region. Their expanse of soft summits and steep valleys can be seen from Traprain Law – a 200 metre high fort-topped hill, capital of the Votadini people in Roman times.
