Self catering in Scotland is a very popular and economic accommodation. There are self catering lodges, self catering castles and self catering cottages. The accommodation is not restricted to rural areas but cities and towns like Edinburgh have a good range of self catering properties. There are properties in Inverness and the Highlands, Sutherland, cottages on the west coast and the Fort William area. Bookings are usually for a week but weekend breaks are popular out of season. Accommodation goes from properties sleeping 1 or 2 to large lodges and castles sleeping 20+. Self catering gives the holiday maker the freedom and choice to live the way you want. Many properties are used and enjoyed by their owners and rented out to cover the running costs whilst others may be purpose built for self catering. Prices vary according to the number of bedrooms, the quality and location.
VisitScotland, Scotland's official tourist board have a quality
assurance scheme and properties are graded with stars. Basically,
the more stars the better the property. The maximum is 5 stars. Not
all property owners subscribe to the scheme so do click through to
their web site or send for a brochure.
